Records, 1822-1900 (bulk 1822-1855).

One bound volume (1822-1855) contains constitutions and by-laws; minutes of meetings (including transcriptions of correspondence); clippings; and annual reports. Included is information about the Society's work, with descriptions of fundraising efforts such as a concert (1842) given by the Instrumental Association of Charleston. Loose items include a clipping (ca. 1900) about the Port Society; reports (1889-1890); a savings account statement (1899-1900); and a statement of Port Society expenses (n.d.), including a chaplain's salary and repairs. The second volume is a record of marriages and baptisms at the Mariners' Church in Charleston during the period 1836-1876, and is largely the work of W.B. Yates. The third volume includes a transcription of the earlier register, and continues the record of marriages and baptisms up to 1897. This latter work was performed by C.E. Chichester. The names in these registers (about 1,000 entries, about 20 percent of which are African Americans) represent not only sailors and families passing through the port of Charleston, but also white and African American residents of the city.
